Vancouver Island and our nearby Gulf Islands are becoming known for the many wineries that dot the rural landscapes and draw cyclists, amongst other travelers, to the back-roads and trail routes weaved through the warm country of the Cowichan Valley, the farmlands of Saanich Peninsula, and the pastoral beauty of the nearby smaller islands. North Central Island communities are catching on too, with new wineries and the essential partners of food and accommodations welcoming the hungry, the thirsty and the well exercised.
There’s cideries, and a growing craft beer industry – even a couple of distilleries. Chef Bill Jones of the Deerholme Farm in the Cowichan Valley contributes a piece on wine and food pairings in the guide and there is so much more. It’s a useful collection of information, and shows some of the key routes a cyclist might find useful enough to connect with their fun and fuel source.
The industry has their own website at wineislands.ca where you can find out more information or order a map directly, but we have theirs and other useful map offerings available for the cost of postage or for purchase (for some of the commercial maps).
We’ll be profiling new maps and sharing some of the secrets (or not so secret) destinations and services that can be found around our discoveries. Contact the Vancouver Island Cycle Tourism Alliance for more information on the Wine Islands or for information you might need to plan or navigate your way through your next tour.
